Paper Letter

Date: Oct, 28, 2011

Mr. Peterson

Assistant Principal
International School of Kuala Lumpur
Ampang, Malaysia

Dear Mr. Peterson, the world is having a shortage of paper and other scarce resources. For example our library using a ton of paper everyday and I would feel a lot more comfortable about our school if we could reduce this. It would really benefit us because of the cost and having a more eco-friendly school. This will make our school look a lot more professional and friendly to the environment. Will you come and face the truth, about this problem or will you deny it complete.

Originally we thought this wouldn’t really help much with the school except for creating a greater eco school. We then went more in depth with the problem, and noticed that we invest and spend a lot of money for monthly amounts of paper. According to the green pages it states that we used around 10 millions pieces of paper. This is an unbelievable number that has a huge cost affect onto the school. For the environment part, the school is horrible because they continue to use paper like water, and this is a poor factor since the world is basically in an environmental crisis.

Our school is using around 10 million sheets of paper every year, and that is horrible for the cost and environment. According to the Iskl green pages it costs 30 sen for black and white printed-paper, and 50 sen for colored. If you multiply the 10 million by .30 it is 3 million ringgit. This is atrocious because our school cuts back on un-necessary things, and they don’t even think about the most common resource to be easily controlled. From an environmental viewpoint this waste so much, not just paper is used ink cartridges, and electricity is wasted a lot. This may seem like a small problem because it’s just our school, but if you imagine the whole world doing the same it would have a massive bad global issue

To make sure we have met these goals, or standards is that we can take a monthly check on paper usage throughout the school and classrooms. This will help us compare what we have now and what we used to have, this will help us improve our knowledge on what classes, or programs need to cut back a little/a lot. Not only should we check the amount of paper used, but we should also monitor the ink cartridges and electricity. If we can monitor and cut back on these things we can help the amount of money spent, and most importantly the environment.

Mr. Peterson, to conclude my topic our school spends a lot of money on an overload of paper for printing. Cutting back is our main goal to point out, but switching to tablets instead of booklets and google docs instead of a 15 page printed essay. This could really help our ecological footprint with our school, and help us create a better society.

Sincerely,

Ryan Scott

Food Inc. Reflection

Corn Production - I believe that the mass production of corn, is controlling our ways of eating and lifestyles. The movie stated that more than 80% of groceries, and food products have some corn particles within the food. People are now having animals eat corn and consume it, even though only 50 years ago they only ate grass. The reason they are trying this is because they

Animal Cruelty - I believe that now a days we produce meat, and food a lot more quickly and inhumane. Before the Industrial Revolution we would kill our prey maybe with an arrow or a gun. This would make it die quickly and less brutal, but now its different. Our food industries basically have everything on a conveyer belts, and kill every thing by smashing, crushing, sawing, and or cutting them until they die. Everyday at the biggest slaughter house in the world, the count of animals killed per. day is around 33,000 animals every 24 hours. This is insane, because the workers all have different jobs and don't care about what there doing to the animals. I believe that everyday we grow more and more with factories and industries, we become more selfish, and savage.
